Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre believes the Reds have done 'fantastically well' in bringing Kenny Dalglish back to the club as a non-executive director.

It was announced on Friday by owners Fenway Sports Group and the club that the Scot had accepted an invitation to join the board of directors at Anfield.

Ayre has explained that such a move was always anticipated and declared his pleasure that the man who not only wore the Liverpool shirt as a player, but also managed the Reds on two separate occasions, had returned.

"I never had any doubt that Kenny would come back at some point," he said. "But it was just about getting the timing right and the role right and I think we've done fantastically well on both fronts.

"We were always conscious that he would come back. Kenny is part of the furniture at Liverpool. We are like one big family. Kenny will always be part of the Liverpool family and rightly so.

"He understands the fans. He understands the club. He understands what makes it tick and for that reason he should be part of it and I'm very pleased to have him back."
