Liverpool defender Andre Wisdom skippered England U21s to a 1-0 win over Moldova in their opening fixture of European U21 Championship qualifying on Thursday.

West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino bagged the only goal of the match, converting after just 13 minutes in new coach Gareth Southgate's maiden fixture at the helm.

Wisdom completed the whole match at the Madejski Stadium and went close to finding the target with two first-half headers.

On-loan Reds full-back Jack Robinson, who is currently with Blackpool, was an unused substitute on the night.

Southgate's side return to action on Monday, when they travel to Finland to take on the Group 1 leaders. Lithuania, San Marino and Wales complete the section.

Midfielder Suso featured for all but the final 10 minutes of Spain U21s' impressive 6-2 triumph at Austria in Group 4.

Krisztian Adorjan inspired a second-half turnaround for Hungary, creating a goal and converting a penalty after joining the action at half-time as the hosts battled from a goal behind to beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-1.

Earlier in the day, Reds youngster Jordon Ibe played the full 90 minutes and was among the goalscorers as England's U19s recorded an emphatic 6-1 victory over Estonia.
