Martin Skrtel has been named Slovakian Player of the Year for the third time.

The centre-back flew home to attend the ceremony in Trnava after our Carling Cup triumph.

And an unforgettable weekend got even better when it was announced that he had beaten Marek Hamsik of Napoli and Genoa's Juraj Kucka.

Skrtel said: "I am very happy to win it for the third time. I was not successful for the last two years but this year is different.

"Everything is going so well. I would like to say thanks for all the votes you gave me and for all the support people are showing me. It is a great feeling.

"I can only promise you that I will work as hard as I can to win it again."

Skrtel previously won the award in 2007 and 2008.
