Charlie Adam is hungry for more success after landing the first trophy of his Liverpool career.

The Scot suffered the heartbreak of seeing his penalty sail over Tom Heaton's crossbar during Sunday's Carling Cup final shoot-out - but seven spot-kicks later he was celebrating with victorious teammates.

After the game he insisted the reason players sign for Liverpool is to be a part of such occasions.

"I'm delighted," the midfielder told Liverpoolfc.tv. "The character to come back from losing a goal so late was great. To win on penalties - we'll take that. I know it's been a long time to win a trophy but we're delighted.

"That's why we come here - to win trophies. And after winning the first trophy of the season, hopefully it will kick us on now until the end of the season. I'd be delighted if it's the first of many. We're still in the FA Cup, we're still challenging in the league, so it's going to be a good end to the season.

"The players we had on the pitch were good enough to win any game and you've just got to take your time and be patient, and we did that.

"The fans back the team to the hilt every week and these cup finals are special only if you win them. We have more good days than bad days at this club and everybody will be happy. We're just delighted to get our first piece of silverware."

Meanwhile, Andy Carroll was keen to heap praise on Stewart Downing after the former Middlesbrough man gave a man-of-the-match performance at Wembley.

Downing netted a crucial penalty in the shoot-out and Carroll paid tribute to the winger's willingness to take on opponents and the quality of his crossing.

"He was unbelievable," the No.9 told Liverpoolfc.tv. "That's what he's all about: he gets the ball, he puts it in the box and he beats players. He was great today.

"It's a great feeling to win. There were a few scary moments. When they went 1-0 up we had to fight back and all the lads did well to fight back to 1-1. I thought as the game went on we deserved the win. But it was a tough game.

"Liverpool's a massive club and we should be winning competitions like this. We're still in the FA Cup and we're looking to get to the final of that. So, it's all going good at the minute. The fans are unbelievable. We came into the dressing room and they were still out there celebrating."
