Glen Johnson has revealed how he kept his nerve after being asked to be one of Liverpool's five penalty takers in Sunday's Carling Cup final shoot-out.

The England star joined Stewart Downing and Dirk Kuyt in converting from 12 yards to finally see off Cardiff City.

Johnson had been approached by Liverpool's second-in-command, Steve Clarke, before the spot-kicks commenced.

"Clarkey asked me and I said yes," he told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"I just tried to blank out as much as possible and it was just me against the 'keeper. So I tried to get my head down and just put it in the net - that's all.

"Thankfully the first five of us got it done."

Johnson also admitted that one of the reasons he joined the club three years ago was to be part of celebrations like the ones witnessed in the capital on Sunday.

"It's what you join Liverpool Football Club for," he said. "It's a fantastic club, we've got some great stars and players and obviously with medals - the more the merrier!

"Words can't describe it. It's fantastic - it's what the lads have worked so hard for and I think we deserved it. We didn't play great throughout the game but I think there was only going to be one winner."

The full-back also reserved special praise for the tens of thousands of Reds fans who packed into Wembley and who were in full voice throughout what was an intense 120 minutes of football followed by a penalty shoot-out.

He now wants to reward them with another Wembley trip in the FA Cup.

"That's what you need," said Johnson. "We're very grateful for their support and I hope they enjoyed it. The lads were cramping-up there towards the end and when you hear them chanting, that's what gives you the extra little bit to push on.

"It would mean the world (to go back). That's what football is about - getting to finals and winning these trophies. That's what it's all about, that's what we work hard for day in, day out."
