Jamie Carragher joked that he expected no different after Liverpool once again put their fans through 120 minutes of cup final agony.

The League Cup triumph over Cardiff was the fourth time during Carragher's playing career that Liverpool have needed penalties to clinch a trophy.

And the vice-captain told Liverpoolfc.tv: "Every final that Liverpool are in, all the finals I've been involved in with the club - we always put the supporters and ourselves through it and it was exactly the same here.

"We gave our best and they made it very difficult for us. But we knew it was going to be like that. You talk about it being a big game for us but Cardiff had the same build up, the same family and friends here.

"It was massive for them - maybe even bigger for them because some of them maybe haven't played at that level or this stage before and maybe they won't again. It was always going to be tough, but as long as you get over the line, that's the main thing."

While Carragher has won the UEFA Cup, League Cup, Champions League and FA Cup over the years, this was his first piece of silverware at Wembley.

"It's something you dream of as a kid," he said. "It used to be the 39 steps - I'm not sure how many it was today. But it was great to see Stevie lift the trophy at Wembley. We've had great days at Cardiff but not been to Wembley.

"The most important thing is the club winning trophies and hopefully it's the first of many to come."
