Tom Werner and John Henry spoke of their pride after the 'extraordinary' Kenny Dalglish led Liverpool to the first of what they hope will be many trophies under their ownership.

The duo were at Wembley to watch the Reds beat Cardiff on penalties to win the Carling Cup.

Their first piece of silverware comes just 18 months since they took over at Anfield and is reward for their generous investment in players.

Werner told Liverpoolfc.tv: "The key is that we accomplished something as a club and for our fans. I'm just proud we won because it's a first step and we're looking forward to more silver.

"I really have to pinch myself. To all of our supporters, they've seen a remarkable football match. I thought we were the better team and I'm so proud of the club and so excited for all those fans around the world who watched.

"I really couldn't watch the penalties. I heard but I couldn't watch.

"It's certainly at the very top (of what I've ever achieved), and to go into that dressing room and see the joy those players had: it's a memory we have and want to share with our fans."

Unlike Werner, Henry was able to watch as penalties from Stewart Downing, Dirk Kuyt and Glen Johnson sealed victory after the 120 minutes ended 2-2.

He said: "I was doing better than Tom. Tom was under the seat, he couldn't watch.

"This is the first step for this club in trying to get to the point where we're talking about things on the field rather than off the field. It's been going on for so many years now that it was time for the club to step up and win a big match like this.

"Just getting here: beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on two days' rest, to beat Manchester City over two legs - it was a tremendous accomplishment just to get here. Even if we'd lost I would have felt we'd accomplished a lot, but we didn't. It doesn't matter how you win if you win.

"The whole club had a lot of pressure but Kenny has been extraordinary from day one."
