Steve McManaman believes King Kenny's class of 2012 can join a list of Liverpool greats if they achieve Carling Cup glory against Cardiff City at Wembley on Sunday.

The former Anfield hero, who hit a double strike to help the Reds win the 1995 League Cup and also played a pivotal role in the 1992 FA Cup final, insists a victory could kick-start a bright new era for Dalglish's charges.

"The lads will be looking forward to it. They will be nervous of course because they are playing at Wembley and they certainly haven't experienced the new Wembley in a Liverpool shirt, so it must be a wonderful feeling," McManaman told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"It's a cup final at Wembley and this is a chance for the lads to be in the history books alongside players from the past who have won everything. It's a great occasion for them.

"A lot has been made about this Wembley thing and I think the slight detractors of Liverpool FC forget that we've played in numerous League and FA Cup finals in Cardiff at the Millennium Stadium.

"It's great to go back to Wembley and Liverpool are big favourites. They've done a lot of the hard work but they've still got one hurdle to do - get the cup, celebrate and let's add it to the history of another trophy for Liverpool."

The former Academy graduate also believes Dalglish deserves a lot of credit for playing strong teams en route to the showpiece final.

He added: "I don't see why teams don't set their stall out and play a strong team. The likes of Liverpool and certainly Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City nowadays have such big squads so they can do that.

"Liverpool had Exeter and Brighton to get past first, tricky games as you don't want to lose these games and be the victims of giant killers.

"For me it's a no brainer. You have to set your marker down, you have to be successful and try to win things.

"You look at Arsenal losing in the final last season to Birmingham City. People have since said that's when things started to go wrong for Arsenal."

As for the key to winning at Wembley, McManaman believes Steven Gerrard will be a vital influence to the team on Sunday.

He said: "Liverpool just need to approach it like any other game. I know it's an easy thing to say but just approach it like they did against Brighton.

"You know Cardiff City will be working hard and trying their best and you need to match that. We need to be ruthless. When you get the opportunity score goals and finish the game off as soon as possible then you can start to enjoy yourself.

"For me Steven Gerrard is still the stand out player for Liverpool. Luis Suarez has done very well, and Craig Bellamy has had something of a renaissance season. He has scored some important goals.

"I hope we are talking about a comfortable victory and the defence can be as solid as they have been."
