Liverpool will equal Arsenal's record when they play their 14th League Cup semi-final tonight against Manchester City.

The sides have been drawn together in this competition three times before:-

2nd leg. Liverpool 1 (Dalglish) Man City 1.

It is their first since 2004-05 when they beat Watford 1-0 home and away with Steven Gerrard scoring the only goal of each meeting.

Liverpool have won this trophy on a record seven occasions, the last being in 2003 when they defeated Manchester United 2-0 in Cardiff.

They are looking to extend their record by appearing in an 11th Final.

The Reds have won their last three semi-finals - Crystal Palace (2001), Sheffield United (2003) and Watford two years later.

The last team to beat them at this stage were Middlesbrough in 1998.

Their last four semi-finals have all come against teams from the second tier. The last time they faced a Premier League side at this stage was Crystal Palace in 1995 when Robbie Fowler scored in each leg to give Liverpool a 2-0 aggregate victory.

Liverpool have won nine of the last 11 League Cup semi-finals they have contested.

The last top-flight team to beat Liverpool at this stage were Queens Park Rangers in 1986.

Liverpool's other semi-final defeat came at the hands of Nottingham Forest in 1980.

On all three occasions Liverpool have been eliminated at the last four stage they failed to score in the away leg.

The Reds have an excellent record at Anfield in the semi-final having not lost any of the 13 games played - winning eight of them.

Only one player has scored a League Cup hat-trick against Liverpool - Arsenal's Julio Baptista scored four in a 6-3 win at Anfield in 2007.

Liverpool have scored 14 hat-tricks in this competition with the last coming from Fernando Torres at Reading in a 4-2 win in September 2007.

The Reds have failed to score in only one of the last 42 matches in the League Cup - at Chelsea in December 2007.

Liverpool reached this stage by winning 3-1 at Exeter in Round two with goals from Luis Suarez, Maxi and Andy Carroll, and by recording a 2-1 victory at Brighton in Round three thanks to Craig Bellamy and Dirk Kuyt.

In Round four they came from behind to see off Stoke at the Britannia 2-1 with Luis Suarez scoring twice in a game for the Reds for the first time.

They won at 2-0 Chelsea in the quarter-final with Maxi and Martin Kelly (his first for the club) scoring in six second half minutes.

This is Liverpool's fifth successive away fixture in the League Cup - the first time they have played as many in succession on the road in this competition.

Liverpool kept only their second clean sheet in the last 13 League Cup ties in the last round at Chelsea.

The Reds have used 23 different players in this season's competition with only Pepe Reina, Maxi and Jay Spearing starting all four games.

Liverpool lost at City in the league 3-0 eight days ago. Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and James Milner (penalty) scoring the goals. Gareth Barry was sent off 17 minutes from time.

Earlier in the campaign the Anfield fixture produced a 1-1. Joleon Lescott deflected a Charlie Adam shot into his own net two minutes after Vincent Kompany opened the scoring for City. Mario Balotelli was sent off 18 minutes after coming on as substitute.

Maxi has scored 11 goals in his last 13 starts for the Reds.

Martin Skrtel could make his 150th appearance for Liverpool in this game.

Steven Gerrard has not started a League Cup game since October 2007 when he scored in a 2-1 home win over Cardiff City.

Liverpool have won one of last four away games in all competitions - at Aston Villa on 18th December (their only goals in those fixtures).

The Reds have failed to score in half of their 10 top flight away games this season but have scored in all four cup games on the road.

Liverpool have scored in only one of the last six visits to City. That came in a 3-2 win in October 2008 with Dirk Kuyt among the scorers that day.

This will be City's seventh semi-final - they have won three and on two occasions have gone on to lift the trophy.

In 1970 they beat Manchester United 4-3 on aggregate and went on to beat West Brom in the final.

They defeated Plymouth 3-1 over two legs in 1974 but lost the Final to Wolves 2-1.

Two years later they beat Middlesbrough 4-1 on aggregate and overcame Newcastle 2-1 in the Wembley final.

City lost in the last four to Stoke in 1963-64, Liverpool in 1981 and two years ago lost 4-3 on aggregate to Manchester United after winning the first leg at home 2-1. Carlos Tevez scored all three of City's goals.

Last season they went out at the first hurdle to West Bromwich Albion beaten 2-1 at the Hawthorns.

Five City players have started all of the League Cup games this season - Costel Pantilimon, Aleksandar Kolarov, Stefan Savic, Pablo Zabaleta and the unavailable Kolo Toure.

Sergio Aguero has scored six goals in his last seven home games.

City have lost two of their last three games and three of the last seven after being undefeated in the previous 20 league and League Cup games.

They have conceded three goals in a game twice this season - both to Manchester United (in the Community Shield and FA Cup).

They played 78 minutes with 10 men on Sunday after Vincent Kompany was red carded in the 3-2 home FA Cup defeat to city neighbours United.

Kompany was the second City player to be sent off in the last two games - Gareth Barry was sent-off against Liverpool last week.

Roberto Mancini has faced Liverpool over two legs once before as a manager.

His Inter Milan side lost 3-0 on aggregate to the Reds in the last 16 of the Champions League in 2008.
