Jamie Carragher believes Lucas Leiva has been just as important as Luis Suarez to Liverpool's progress – and admits his injury lay-off is a significant blow.

The Brazilian has been ruled out until the end of the season after damaging the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during the Carling Cup win at Chelsea.

The Reds' vice captain feels he has been one of the club's most consistent players over the past two seasons and reckons his growing influence will be missed.

"For the last 18 months, in my opinion, he has been our best player," said Carragher.

"Luis Suarez has come in and done great things for the club but Lucas has been his equal in many ways.

"He has been as good as anyone in the team this season and there is no question he will be a big miss."

Lucas's superb start to 2011-12 has firmly cemented his place as a Kop favourite.

Carragher has been hugely impressed by his attitude since arriving at Anfield and points to his inner strength as reason why he is now starring in the Reds' engine room.

He said: "High standards are expected when you play for one of the big clubs and there are plenty examples of players who have gone missing after realising the demands on them.

"But you can tell Lucas is a top player as he never lets that bother him. He has just got on with it and plays in nearly every game.

"If he has a little knock, he will always try and carry on, doing his best for us. There are lots of different characters but you can't fault Lucas."

Meanwhile, Lucas's teammates have been quick to offer their support to the Brazil international.

Suarez tweeted: "With all my heart, be strong @LucasLeiva87!! We are with you!!"

Charlie Adam followed suit via his own Twitter account: "Gutted to hear the news about @LucasLeiva87. He will be back a better and stronger player."
