Kenny Dalglish is confident both Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher will return to action in the near future after the duo missed the 2-0 triumph at West Brom.

The Reds boss was quizzed about their omission from the squad at his post-match press conference at the Hawthorns and the Scot was quick to allay any fears over their long-term fitness.

Dalglish told reporters: "Carragher has a calf strain. Steven Gerrard has an infection in his ankle.

"Steven was in my mind for the game today but it just flared up. We are off tomorrow, so we'll have a more accurate idea on Monday or Tuesday when we return to training. We will be more accurate next week than what we can be now."

The fact that the Reds still managed to pick up the three points at the Hawthorns without the pair also pleased Dalglish, who admitted it illustrates the strength of the squad he now has at his disposal.

"We are certainly much better with them in the squad than out of it," he said.

"They have done magnificently for this football club and they will continue to do magnificently for us too.

"They will continue to make a contribution, even now.

"I suppose it is a reflection on the strength of the squad when the two talismanic figures aren't playing and you still come and put on such a top performance."

First-half goals from Charlie Adam (penalty) and Andy Carroll ensured the Reds moved to within a point of third-placed Chelsea.

Dalglish was delighted with his team's overall display and felt the controversy surrounding the opener from the spot was irrelevant in light of the chances they had to make the scoreline more flattering.

"I thought we played really well, we thoroughly deserved to win the game and some of the football we played was fantastic," he said.

"If you want to review every decision in the game, we'll be here for a while.

"I couldn't see it from where I sat and I haven't seen the television either. I'm not trying to be evasive or duck the question. Our boys had a big appeal for a handball too, which we didn't get as well."

He continued: "It could have been more comfortable, but 2-0 is pretty satisfactory for us coming here. They've been playing well, they beat Villa away. Okay, Villa went down to 10-men with a poor sending off, but they played really well here against Wolves too.

"So after having a difficult start, Roy has got them turned around and playing really well, so it was going to be difficult for us getting something here.

"We've not lost a goal and scored two at the other end. We played some great football and could have had a lot more goals, but we are happy with the three points.

"A clean sheet is very pleasing, it helps you to get something from a game, but goals win you games, so I think from Pepe through to everyone we played really well."

Luis Suarez produced yet another virtuoso showing against the Baggies which inevitably led journalists to ask Dalglish to wax lyrical about the Uruguayan.

The boss conceded the No.7 had been instrumental once again but was quick to lay the credit at the feet of all of his players.

He said: "I made a quote after the game on Wednesday night, that after a week I ran out of superlatives about Luis.

"And I've not educated myself in three or four days, so what I said then stands now. He's a fantastic footballer and I think for us there were a lot of excellent performances out there. There's not one player who played for us that could be disappointed with their performance.

"Luis and Andy haven't played that many games together and I thought they did well today. I'm sure everyone in our squad is appreciative of what Luis does, but I'm sure that also applies the other way. Today was a great example of how together they are as a group. I thought that was a huge factor in us getting a result.

"Obviously within the group there are people who excel a bit more than others and for us it seems like that is Luis quite often, but I don't think the rest of them are too far behind."

The victory moves Liverpool well within range of the Champions League places but Dalglish refused to be drawn on the latest standings.

"We'll just keep bouncing on," he added. "At the end of the season we'll find out where we finish, as I've said in the past, we'll take it one game at a time."
