Kenny Dalglish will have talks with Luis Suarez next week before deciding when to throw the Copa America winner into Barclays Premier League action.

The 24-year-old spent a large chunk of July helping Uruguay win a record 15th South American championship, scooping player of the tournament along the way.

Liverpool fans will be eager to see him back in a red shirt, such was his impact on the team following a January transfer from Ajax - but Dalglish will remain pragmatic.

"Luis will be back next week and we'll start thinking about him then," said the boss.

"We'll just see with Luis when he comes in. He's had a fantastic summer. He was fantastically successful in the Copa America both as an individual and as a team player.

"He should be happy with himself and pretty confident looking forward to the start of the season.

"We need to be careful with every player. We'll see how he is when he comes in and have a discussion with him. We can't predict how he is going to be."

Meanwhile, fellow January signing Andy Carroll has earned words of support from Dalglish.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a rest over the summer after injury punctuated his first few months on Merseyside.

After hitting two goals from five appearances during pre-season, Carroll is starting to show why the club acted so decisively for his signature six months ago.

"Andy is fit and well - better than he was last season when he was getting over his injury," Dalglish said.

"Last season was stop-start for him with the injuries. If you are more settled, fitter and happier, then you will play better."

Carroll is capable of creating goals from nothing, as Manchester City discovered to their detriment during a 3-0 defeat at Anfield in April.

But there can be no doubt that the addition of Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam this summer will only improve the service provided to our No.9.

Dalglish added: "They have been brought in to help Liverpool Football Club. There is no 'i' in team, is there?

"Andy Carroll hasn't played that many games. Andy will help them every bit as much as he will get help from them.

"We'll all help each other, stick together and see what happens."
