Liverpool U23s produced an excellent display as they played out a goalless draw with Coventry City's first team in the Nuneaton tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Sky Blues boss Mark Robins fielded seven new signings and it was a great examination for Neil Critchley’s side at The Coombe Abbey Arena.

The young Reds created some good chances on the day with Yan Dhanda and Toni Gomes going close.

Dhanda was so unlucky to see his 25-yard free-kick strike the post while Gomes was denied from close range.

Critchley’s charges play PSV Eindhoven’s B team in their final game in the Nuneaton tournament on Sunday afternoon at 2.30pm BST.

Reflecting on the draw, Critchley told Liverpoolfc.com: "Considering we were up against a Football League side who are one week away from starting their season, there were a lot of positives for us to take.

"We will look to be better in the final third because we didn't threaten their goal enough but we defended well.

"It was a great experience for our boys because they don't get the chance to play against senior players like this too often, so it was a step up but they handled themselves well."

Liverpool U23s: George, Whelan, Juanma (Hart, 60), Phillips, Jones (Masterson, 60), Williams (Brannagan, 60), Adekanye (Coyle, 60), Virtue, Gomes, Kane, Dhanda.
