For many years, we have had meaningful work happening across the Club to tackle these issues.The Red Way launched in January 2021 as a way of bringing all of this good work together giving us a benchmark to measure and demonstrate our progress against. We have six clear objectives under each of our focus areas, that provide us with a clear aim for what we want to achieve. And we are committed to continual improvement. This is why we use an external verification system – ISO20121 – to hold us to account. We are proud to be the only major European football club to hold this certification.We also know that we cannot achieve everything that we are setting out to do on our own. We want our supporters, partners and everyone connected to the Club to be on this journey with us. We hope you will join us. This is The Red Way.

The Red Way 

Our People focus is about everyone that interacts with the Club, in particular our staff, including our players and our supporters. It is about how we care for them, support them and enable them to create a club that we can all be proud of.We have two key objectives under ‘People’1. To build knowledgeable, informed and respected sustainability leaders and championsWe’ve been leading the way in equality, diversity and inclusion for many years, having been the first professional football club to be awarded the Advanced level of the Premier League Equality Standard (now called the Premier League Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Standard) back in 2017. We’ve been awarded this level year on year based on our continuous evolution in this space and are always looking at ways we can improve.All our work in this space is driven by our equality, diversity and inclusion action plan Red Together. Our People 

Sport can play a critical role in limiting the worst effects of climate change and creating a sustainable future for our planet.We recognise that we must do everything we can to limit our harmful effect on the globe. But we also believe we can go further than that and use our platform as a positive voice for change.We have two key objectives under planet:1. To minimise our negative impact on the environment2. To create a net positive impact on the environmentWe have already begun making practical changes to the way we operate. For example, during the 2020-21 season we switched all our mains fed energy (gas and electricity) to renewable tariffs. This covers all our sites – Anfield, The AXA Training Centre and The Academy.This switch has prevented 2,636 tonnes of potential carbon emissions from being emitted. This is equivalent to the annual carbon emissions of 264 individuals in the U.K.This is just one example of the changes we are making. There is a long way to go, but we are committed to the journey.The Club is a signatory to the <a href="https://unfccc.int/climate-action/sectoral-engagement/sports-for-climate-action">UN Sports for Climate Action</a> Framework.In 2021, we became a signatory of the United Nations Sport for Climate Action Framework, joining over 300 global sports organisations in a collective ambition to drive action on carbon emissions and climate change.The framework commits us to achieving specific climate goals of halving our operational emissions by 2030 and aiming to achieve net zero by 2040.The framework also outlines the significant carbon impact of fans within sport and commits us to take responsibility for this by implementing practical reduction plans.We estimated emissions relating to fan travel in the 2021-22 season to be almost 15,500 tonnes CO2e. Reducing fan travel emissions will require a coordinated approach across sports, National and Local Government. We plan to work with our cosignatories of the UN Sports for Climate Action framework to tackle this at scale over the coming seasons.As demonstrated in our most recent<a href="https://www.liverpoolfc.com/info/fan-travel-survey-data"> fan travel survey</a> most fans, 67%, currently travel by car or taxi with just 3% walking and 11% using public, club or fan group arranged transport. Future practical reduction plans will aim to reduce the number of fans travelling by car, instead using local public transport links, walking and other low-carbon alternatives such as cycling.Furthermore, in January 2022, we increased our level of ambition in line with the evolution of the framework and signed up to the UN Race to Zero whereby we are committing to achieve net zero as soon as possible.

Our Planet

Liverpool Football Club is known the world over, but we are rooted in our communities. From our earliest days as a Club, we have aimed to look out for each other, particularly those in need. This ethos is what sits at the heart of our communities focus.We have two key objectives under Communities1. We will deliver a positive contribution to our fans and create life changing opportunities for our communities both home and away2. All our partners will be aligned to our sustainability values and support scalable positive impact across our wider impact programmeWe know that we cannot reach our ambitions alone. That is why we are working with all of our partners to actively understand how we can work together to achieve more, together. This can be anything from scaling the reach of a programme, creating a compelling campaign or supporting our suppliers to improve their own sustainability standards. We know we are better when we work together.Much of our work in this space is delivered by our official charity The LFC Foundation (LFCF). It aims to harness the power and passion of the Club’s fans and stakeholders to improve the lives of the most disadvantaged.
