Liverpool hope to sign promising defender

Liverpool hope to beat Tottenham and Manchester City to the signing of Ryan Sessegnon.

The Fulham teenager is one of Liverpool's prime targets though the Craven Cottage club are reluctant to sell the talented 16-year-old this summer, especially if they gain promotion.

Manchester City, Tottenham, Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea have all watched Sessegnon this season while Everton are also keen on his twin brother Steven.

Meanwhile, Sadio Mane will have surgery on his injured knee in London on Tuesday morning.

The winger, who turned 25 on Monday, will undergo the operation to rectify the meniscus damage in his left knee suffered in an awkward collision with Everton's Leighton Baines during the Merseyside derby.

Mane will be sidelined for around eight weeks, meaning that he should be fully fit for the start of pre-season training in July.

He has been Liverpool's top scorer with 13 league goals.
