Solanke: Gomez and Trent prove Klopp is great at development

Dominic Solanke’s steadfast faith in Jürgen Klopp leads the striker to believe he can make the breakthrough at Liverpool.

Fierce competition for places in Klopp’s squad means the 21-year-old is yet to play for the Reds’ first team so far this season.

He has, though, been a regular for England U21s, with his brace in last week’s 2-1 win over Italy taking his 2018-19 tally for the Young Lions to three goals in four games.

Naturally, Solanke - who has also netted in both of his Premier League 2 outings for Liverpool U23s this term - wants to add to the 27 senior appearances he made for his club last season.

However, he looks no further than two of his teammates for proof that Klopp’s methods benefit youngsters.

“Jürgen is a great manager and he knows what he is doing, especially when he is bringing people through,” Solanke - who is set to play for England U21s versus Denmark on Tuesday - said.

“You can see what he has done with Trent [Alexander-Arnold] and Joe [Gomez] at the moment and how far they have gone. They have been two vital players for us this season. I have known them for a few years now so I have seen them breakthrough and he definitely helped them.

“All the team are good [at providing advice and support], really. Everyone has helped me. From the moment I got to Liverpool, they all made me feel welcome and I settled in quite quickly. Whenever they see someone they can give a hand to, they always will.

“It is always nice when you come away and get minutes, especially for your country. Of course, everyone wants to play for their clubs and when you have been away, you have got to go back and fight. But these little breaks are always good, especially if you are getting minutes.”
