Great article! It really is true. We shouldn't whine about buying players that doesn't cost the heavens. We should be happy about it... that we get a great talent so cheep. Brendan knows how to use this. He is a genious.

"Talk about trying to bring our expectations down!! Without our previous marquee signings in the past (Suarez, Torres etc.) we would be lucky to even be in the top half of the table. We better sign either Eriksen or Mkhitaryan or I will loose hope completely"

"What utter BS. We haven't won the PL for eons. Chelsea and MC buy big names and win it. If we had one STAR in 2008-9, a Ribery for example, we would have won the PL then. Sure you need to buy and develop the unknowns, but it seems that is not enough these days. "

"True, but when you are attempting to compete with clubs who can afford to take a hit on spending 20m on a flop or two, what chance do we have? Realistically spending 7-10m on players is unlikely to get us top 4. Players are valued by their proven skills and ability. The only risk then lies on whether they will settle, and some clubs do better at settling players than others."

"Very easy to look back and pick out players who made it big despite being unknowns. But for every Dalglish there have been 3 Dossena's. Sadly, the clubs who spend big nowadays finish higher up the table. Makes it that much harder for managers like BR to build and develop a team. "

"The correlation between squad value and league position isn't going to change any time soon. We will be the most profitable club on the planet, but will never be anything more than mid table. To be the biggest mid table club is FSG's plan, and most fans on here seem happy with that."

"Good article - especially with regard to time required for players to settle in when moving to a new team. Some do it a few weeks or months, others over a longer period. "Liverpool has a great team, but they still need to gain ... and to provide a safe and bench when players get tired, not in the form or in the worst case of injury. Liverpool has young talented players to keep and work on them, there are experienced players, a true leader and with some reinforcements in positions where 'missing' Liverpool players will be an even better team :)"

LFC are not in the same league as Chelsea and Manc's clubs but once the ship is stable progress will be made given time for BR. One season under his belt, he can't be judged on that. I remember Ray Kennedy coming to LFC as a striker but Bob Paisley made him into a midfielder and the rest is history. "
