Liverpool are planning to bring Argentine defender Mateo Musacchio to Anfield from Villarreal this summer, and could get him on a free transfer.
Brendan Rodgers is planning to bring in some defensive reinforcements ahead of what looks certain to be a Champions League season for the Reds next year.
And whilst he has been heavily linked with a move for Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay, Musacchio could prove to be a better option as he is out of contract at the end of the season.
The 23-year-old has also attracted interest from Barcelona now that Puyol has decided to part company with the Catalan club.
But according to talkSPORT, Liverpool have shown more concrete interest so far and Rodgers is continuing to monitor the situation.
The Reds could be in for a busy summer of recruitment and have been linked with several players around Europe. But if they are to spend money in other areas, a free transfer could prove to be a real bonus addition to the squad.
