Brendan Rodgers is trying to pull off a shock £4m deal for England striker Rickie Lambert.
Liverpool boss Rodgers wants to strengthen his strike force and also get another option for his attack and Lambert has emerged as a surprise target.
It means that the Reds could end up signing THREE Southampton players this summer as Rodgers wants to add more depth and quality ahead of a big season in the Champions League.
They are also in for Adam Lallana and are hopeful of completing a big money move for the Southampton captain. Rodgers also wants Southampton defender Dejan Lovren in what would be an incredible treble raid on St Mary's.
Liverpool are struggling to agree a deal with Southampton for Lallana who is desperate to go to Anfield. They hope to reach a compromise with Lallana's former club Bournemouth over a sell-on clause.
But the move for Lambert has come out of left field but could appeal to the 32-year-old Scouser who started his career at Liverpool but was released and worked his way up through the lower leagues.
Lambert has earned his place in England's World Cup squad after an impressive season at St Mary's.
Rodgers is an admirer of his hold up play, he can offer the option of a big centre forward and has good technical ability.
While he might not be first choice ahead of Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez, Rodgers wants different options and proper back-up ahead of the extra challenge of European football next season.
It will still take a lot of doing to persuade Southampton to sell but Liverpool's interest is there and they are trying to push through a deal. They have also shown an interest in Swansea's Wilfried Bony.
Meanwhile, Liverpool have also tabled a £16m bid for Sevilla full back Alberto Moreno and are hopeful that deal will go through.
Liverpool's big spending shows they are determined to push on again next season and is a clear message of intent.
