Rickie Lambert received a dream start to his Anfield career with an opening-day game against previous club Southampton.
New Liverpool signing Lambert - a lifelong fan of the Kop side - could hardly believe his eyes when their 2014-15 Premier League fixtures gave the Saints a trip to the red side of Merseyside to start the new season.
And it could be an even more potent showdown as Brendan Rodgers' side threaten to land at least another two stars from the South Coast club.
Manager Rodgers wants a double deal for Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren - even though negotiations are deadlocked.
Southampton are demanding £30million for Lambert's fellow England World Cup squad member Lallana, despite indicating to the player they would allow him to leave for around £20m - which is close to Liverpool's limit.
Yet so far there has been no agreement and Southampton are also digging their heels in over Lovren, despite the defender demanding a move.
It is understood the Croatia World Cup player has handed in a transfer request to force through an Anfield move after Rodgers offered around £16m.
The Liverpool boss believes he will have a trio of former Saints players to choose against Southampton on the opening weekend, but is resigned to talks dragging all the way to the end of August if necessary.
