Southampton boss Ronald Koeman has targeted World Cup surprise star Ron Vlaar as a replacement for Liverpool-bound Dejan Lovren.
Anfield chief Brendan Rodgers is finally poised to complete a £20million swoop for defender Lovren.
And new Saints boss Koeman is planning for life after Lovren by lining up Aston Villa defender Vlaar, who enjoyed an impressive World Cup campaign as Holland stormed to the semi-finals.
Confirming his interest in the big Dutchman, Koeman said: "Ron would definitely be an option. But I think he won't be cheap right now. Let's just wait and see."
Croatian star Lovren is now expected to agree a four-year deal at Anfield.
Signed for £8.5m from Lyon last summer, he went on to become one of the cornerstones of Southampton's success under Mauricio Pochettino.
Liverpool are also poised to complete the £8.5m signing of Loic Remy from QPR in the coming days.
Mirror Sport revealed on Friday that the Reds had made an approach to Rangers to trigger the clause in the France striker's contract.
Remy is understood to have joined up with Liverpool over the weekend for a medical, having agreed a five-year deal.
