Philippe Coutinho is expected to be confirmed as Brendan Rodgers' second signing of the January transfer window inside the next 24 hours.
Coutinho was due to have his medical today on Merseyside after Liverpool agreed his £8.5million fee with Inter Milan.
The Brazilian midfielder will travel to London with club officials after undergoing his medical to obtain a work permit.
The Reds hope Coutinho's application will be successful without having to appeal, even though he has made just the solitary appearance for Brazil.
Inter chief Massimo Moratti gave his blessing to the move last week. He told inter.it: "There are opportunities there to be seized. Sometimes certain players need the chance to play more.
"And that's why I think this could be a great opportunity for a Coutinho, and a deal that could go very well for us too."
Coutinho came through the youth system at Vasco da Gama before joining Inter at the age of 16.
He spent the second half of last season on loan at Espanyol, where he worked with new Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Pochettino's recent appointment at Saints led to speculation linking him with the south coast club but Coutinho is now set for Anfield.
