Mirror: Chase on for French defender

Liverpool and Newcastle are competing for France Under-21 defender Nicolas Isimat Mirin.

The Paris-born defender has helped unfancied Valenciennes to sixth in Ligue 1.

A product of France’s Clairefontaine academy, £3m Isimat Mirin is under contract until 2014.

His agent Mikkel Beck said: “Nicolas is ambitious. He wants to join a really big club and win trophies.”

How did we get to where we are? I can remember when we only went for the best players and they were queing up to sign.Why did Fenway buy the club if they are not going to invest properly?
