Liverpool have made an offer of £7million for Italy international Davide Astori but are likely to miss out to Southampton.

The 25-year-old defender is valued at £12m by his club Cagliari and Southampton have offered £9.5m and hope to strike a deal, with the Saints in particular need of defensive reinforcements after conceding 37 goals in the first half of the Premier League season.

Astori has been capped twice at international level, and was among the Italy squad who were beaten by England in the early season friendly in Switzerland.

He was also a late consideration for Cesare Prandelli's Euro 2012 when there were doubts over the fitness of Andrea Barzagli.

Whats gone wrong with us? Worse side ever last season. Andy carrol worse signing ever and for 35m. Now everytime i look at transfers we going for the same players as southampton and reading come on like. And to make it better we lose out to em. Sturridge great signing!!!...
