Liverpool are on the brink of signing Rickie Lambert after they launched a shock £4million bid for the England international.
The 32-year-old Southampton striker, who began his career at Liverpool's Academy, is expected to undergo a medical on Saturday.
Brendan Rodgers has been determined to add depth to his squad but the move for boyhood Liverpool fan Lambert has come from leftfield.
The 32-year-old is currently with England squad preparing for Friday's friendly against Peru at Wembley Stadium.
But England manager Roy Hodgson will allow Lambert to travel up to Merseyside to complete his switch for an initial £4million fee plus add ons before the squad flies to Miami for the final leg of their pre-World Cup preparations.
Lambert will be the first major arrival in what is expected to be a busy period for the club.
He could be followed by two of his team-mates from Southampton, too, as Liverpool are still negotiating for the £30million-rated Adam Lallana and have also targeted Dejan Lovren to bolster their defence.
