MANCHESTER UNITED and Liverpool have got a head start over Tottenham in the race to sign Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona after submitting official bids for the Chilean winger.
United and Liverpool are so far joined only by PSG in approaching Barcelona with a real offer for Sanchez despite interest from the likes of Spurs and Juventus.
Sanchez was often omitted from the Barca starting line-up under previous coach Gerardo Martino but Luis Enrique insists that the 25-year-old remains part of his plans for next season.
Last week Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu said: "He's not for sale.
"He has a contract with us and is an important part of the squad.
"Sanchez has had a great season and, of course, will be a part of Barcelona next season as well."
However, reports in Spain suggest that Barcelona may simply be hoping that an inspired performance from Sanchez at the World Cup would drive the player's price up.
It seems that Liverpool and United have tried to avoid that possibility by getting their offers in early.
It now remains to be seen whether either have offered enough to tempt Barcelona to change their stance, or whether this particular transfer saga is set to run throughout the summer.
