Liverpool are ready to battle Arsenal for the signature of Dutch striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
Arsenal have a long-standing interest in Huntelaar and there has been some suggestion that the Gunners could act to try and snare the player this summer.
Liverpool, meanwhile, considered Huntelaar as an option when Andy Carroll departed for West Ham but the player wanted to stay at Schalke.
However, Huntelaar's contract is now entering its final year and he is yet to agree terms on a new deal. While Schalke general manager Horst Heldt is keen to keep all his star players this summer - including Huntelaar - he is aware that he could lose the 30-year-old for nothing in a year's time.
And that could mean that Arsenal and Liverpool could become embroiled in a bidding war to land the player before he puts pen to paper on a new contract in Germany.
