Liverpool have entered the race to sign Manchester United and Monaco target Nicolas Gaitan.
The winger has emerged as the most likely successor to James Rodriguez at Monaco and has given his consent to a move if the Ligue 1 side can agree a fee with Benfica.
But reports in France suggest that Liverpool have also expressed an interest and could now look to hijack the move.
The Argentine midfielder has a £35m release clause but neither Monaco nor Liverpool are ready to pay that amount.
Reports earlier this summer suggested United were considering a £30m bid for the player, but it seems that there is still substantial haggling to go on before a fee is agreed.
Ealier this year Gaitan said: "At the moment I am totally focussed on playing for Benfica since I have a contract with them.
"But I wouldn't mind playing in a different league and, more importantly, to put the club first to help with their serious problems.
"Now I am talking about a purely hypothetical situation but if there is a serious formal proposal that will suit the club then I will explore all options."
And it now seems that the situation is no longer merely hypothetical with Gaitan set to decide between Monaco and Liverpool in the coming days.
