SUNDERLAND have left the door open for Liverpool to make a move for former Manchester City winger Adam Johnson after rejecting a proposal from Everton to take the player on loan.
Reports suggest that the Toffees have approached Sunderland about a move that would see Johnson move to Goodison Park until the end of next season.
The Black Cats are keen to reduce their wage bill this summer, and Johnson, as the club's top earner will be made available.
But reports suggest that Gus Poyet is reluctant to lend Johnson to a Premier League rival and would much prefer a permanent move.
And that could pave the way for Liverpool to step up their interest in the 26-year-old.
