Liverpool FC have increased their offer for Adam Lallana to £25million as his Southampton clubmate Rickie Lambert prepares to complete his £4million move to Anfield.
The Reds' initial bid of £20million for Lallana was rejected by Saints earlier this month and further talks failed to reach a suitable compromise.
Anfield officials have now launched another attempt to secure the England midfielder's services and are awaiting a response from the South Coast outfit, who have been demanding £30million.
The situation is complicated by the fact that Southampton will have to pass on a significant chunk of the fee to Bournemouth, who boast a 25% sell-on clause.
Boss Brendan Rodgers had hoped to get a deal for Saints skipper Lallana completed prior to the World Cup finals but Liverpool are running out of time to make that happen.
The ECHO understands the increased bid of £25million is a 'take it or leave it' offer with the Reds having no intention of going higher than that figure.
If that final offer doesn't trigger a breakthrough in negotiations then Liverpool will walk away and turn their attentions to other targets such as Bayern Munich's Xherdan Shaqiri.
Lallana has attracted interest from a number of clubs but he has his heart set on playing Champions League football at Anfield next season.
His Southampton clubmate Lambert will secure his dream switch to Liverpool over the next 48 hours.
The Kirkby-born 32-year-old will undergo a medical on Merseyside on Saturday after the Reds agreed a fee of £4million plus add-ons for the England international.
Lambert, who scored 117 goals in 235 games for Saints, has already agreed personal terms and will pen a two-year contract.
He left the England camp following Friday night's 3-0 win over Peru at Wembley to complete the formalities prior to flying off to Miami with Roy Hodgson's men on Sunday.
The paperwork will be completed over the weekend and an official announcement will follow from the club on either Sunday or Monday.
Liverpool are also working on completing a deal for highly-rated Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno.
The Reds have been encouraged by the response from the La Liga outfit to their opening offer of £16million this week and are increasingly confident they will land the Spain international.
