Liverpool may have more success in trying to land Barcelona defender Martin Montoya in the summer.
He is reported to have turned down the latest offer from Barcelona over a new deal, apparently because of a lack of first-team action, and if the stalemate continues until the summer a move to Anfield could be on the cards.
