Reds boss Brendan Rodgers may turn his attention to Benfica winger Lazar Markovic if Southampton continue to stall over Adam Lallana.
Rodgers would dearly like Lallana but wants his transfer dealings done early and Southampton are playing hard ball as they have to pay Bournemouth a considerable sell-on fee.
If they continue to stall then a switch in targets to the Serbian may be the next step.
Benfica originally priced the Serbian winger at £30m to ensure he stayed at the Stadium of Light but it is thought they are having second thoughts and may consider a lot less.
However, Rodgers could yet find that he has competition from Chelsea for the Serbian winger. The Blues came close to signing Markovic while he was at Partizan Belgrade only for the deal to fall through and he then moved on to Benfica.
