Liverpool have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen star Jonathan Tah.

Jurgen Klopp is keen to bolster his defensive options at Liverpool and had identified Tah as one of his main targets.

The 20-year-old has impressed at Leverkusen since joining from Hamburg in 2015 and has since represented the Germany national team three times.

But Tah has silenced rumours linking him with a move away from Leverkusen this January.

“I am very happy at Bayer Leverkusen,” Tah told Bild.

“I don’t want to leave.

"We have reached the last 16 in the Champions League, and if somebody wants to call it a stepping stone, I can only say: You can’t ask for much more.

"It's clear that I want to play in the Champions League. We need to play a good Ruckrunde to reach this goal.

"I still have the expectation and the conviction that we will play in Europe next season."
