Liverpool will not rival Manchester United for Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk in the January transfer window, according to reports.

The Daily Mail claims that the Netherlands international has a £25 million release clause but Jurgen Klopp’s side will not pursue a deal as they want to strengthen other areas in the upcoming window.

Manchester City and Everton are also keen on the 25-year-old, who was signed from Celtic last year for £13 million.

According to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Liverpool and City have sent a scout to watch Van Dijk in every game for the past two months.
