Liverpool could renew their interest in Axel Witsel once he becomes a free agent at the end of the season, according to reports.

The Reds were linked with Belgium international Witsel over the summer.

Everton and Juventus were also keen on the star, with the Serie A side reportedly agreeing personal terms over a big-money move.

Express Sport understands he was on Toffees boss Ronald Koeman's summer shopping list but the Dutchman failed to secure a move.

Zenit St Petersburg rejected Juve's offer of £21million despite knowing Witsel can leave on a free at the end of the current campaign.

And the Daily Mirror claim Liverpool could be interested in the former Benfica ace's signature now that his contract is set to run down.

According to the report, 27-year-old Witsel is keen to leave Russia but could not force his way out of Zenit before the summer transfer deadline.

And Zenit sporting director Maksim Mitrofanov has confirmed the player, who cost £30m when he arrived four years ago, will leave in 2017.

"The club have no intention to extend Witsel's deal," he told Italian outlet Itasportpress.

"Witsel doesn't want to leave us until the end of his deal [but] we have already had an offer."
