Liverpool winger Sheyi Ojo is set to be sidelined for a month after a scan revealed he has suffered a fracture in his back.

The 19-year-old complained of discomfort following the tour of America and missed the pre-season double header against Barcelona and Mainz.

The Reds initially believed the problem was only minor but Ojo has now been diagnosed with a small fracture which means it will be mid-September before he’s likely to play again.

Rather than one particular incident, a sustained heavy workload is understood to have caused the damage which now requires a period of rest.

Ojo had a hectic 2015/16 season as a loan spell at Wolves was followed by his return to Liverpool in January. He was handed his senior debut by Jurgen Klopp and went on to make 11 first-team appearances.

His international commitments with England Under-19s meant he didn’t have a proper break this summer as he helped them reach the semi-finals of the European Championship in Germany.

Ojo, who joined the Reds’ Academy from MK Dons in 2011, then headed straight for California last month to link up with Klopp’s squad on tour. Blessed with pace and power, he impressed in the matches against Chelsea, AC Milan and Roma before back pain forced him to seek medical help.
