Liverpool are set to sign former Barcelona defender Juanma after he impressed on trial.

The 19-year-old left back began his spell with Liverpool in July when he played in a 4-1 win for their U23 side against Rhyl.

He has since impressed coaching staff enough to be handed a contract at Anfield and will sign subject to a medical.

Real name Juan Manuel Garcia, he can play at left-back and centre-back and will go into Michael Beale's U23 squad for the new season.

A teammate of fellow Reds youngsters Pedro Chirivella and Madger Gomes in the Spanish youth sides, he worked his way towards the Barcelona A team - where he made 17 appearances in the UEFA Youth League, including six as captain.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo after a friendly against Rhyl last month, U23 coach Beale said: "Juanma is a boy who's come in to spend the week with us with a view to maybe seeing more of him.

"He's only had a couple of days training with us, speaks very little English but you can see a very good player.

"He's very versatile and can play in different positions because technically he's very good.

"I quite like him, he reminds he a little bit of someone like a Pablo Zabaleta-type player, a nice player."
