Jurgen Klopp is close to signing Ragnar Klavan from Augsburg as defensive cover for Liverpool ahead of the new season.

Estonia international Klavan is set to arrive on Merseyside in the next 48 hours for an initial fee of just over £4m as Klopp brings in reinforcements at centre-back following the departures of Kolo Toure and Martin Skrtel.

Klavan, 30, has amassed 108 international caps and is left-footed which will provide further balance to Liverpool’s options in the position.

Klopp rates youngster Joe Gomez, who missed the majority of last season with a cruciate knee injury and currently has an Achilles problem, highly and rather than signing a young player he is moving for the experienced Klavan.

The defender, who has been at Augsburg since 2012, featured against Liverpool in the Europa League last season.

Meanwhile, Klopp has targeted Newcastle's Georginio Wijnaldum as he looks to bolster his midfield ranks ahead of next season.

The 49-year-old is looking to complete a £20m deal to bring the Dutchman to Anfield.
