Liverpool are on the verge of sealing a deal for Mainz goalkeeper Loris Karius, sources have told ESPN FC.

Karius, 22, is regarded as one of the Bundesliga's top talents and was voted third best goalkeeper in Germany by kicker this season.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has made a new goalkeeper one of his top transfer priorities this summer as he looks to bring in competition and cover for current No.1 Simon Mignolet, and Karius has been on his radar for a while.

The German only signed a new deal in January, but inserted a clause that would allow him to leave for €10 million (£7.9m) and sources told ESPN FC that Liverpool have been in advanced talks with Mainz for several weeks.

Karius has previous experience of playing in England after leaving Stuttgart to spend two years in Manchester City's academy moving back to Germany with Mainz in 2011.

Sources have told ESPN FC that Klopp is keen to get his transfer business done early this summer so that he can fully prepare for preseason, with Bayern Munich forward Mario Gotze and Poland international Piotr Zielinski of Udinese among his list of targets.
