Transfer interest in Manchester United and Liverpool target Ilkay Gundogan has derailed Borussia Dortmund's hopes of locking him down to a new contract.

According to Dortmund head coach Thomas Tuchel, the club are trying to secure 25-year-old Gundogan a new deal.

The playmaker's current contract expires in June 2017 after he signed a one-year extension last summer.

United are understood to be keen on securing his services, claim the Metro, although a January deal never materialised.

Meanwhile, the Liverpool Echo claim Liverpool have been linked to the player ever since former Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp took over at Anfield.

“The importance of Ilkay is undisputed – I would like to tell you that he has extended until 2026, unfortunately that is not the case, but we are in talks. We have a good chance,” said Tuchel.

“The interest in Gundogan is great, which is why talks are not very easy.”

Germany international Gundogan boasts three goals in 31 appearances for club and country this season.
