Arsenal will battle it out with Liverpool for Javier Hernandez’s signature, according to reports.

The 27-year-old striker left Manchester United last summer for good having spent a season on loan at Real Madrid.

Bayer Leverkusen paid just £7.3million for the Mexican who has been in red-hot form with 22 goals for the club in just 26 appearances so far this campaign.

The striker spent four full seasons playing in England, racking up 152 games and 59 goals for United in that time.

And having now rediscovered his goal-scoring form in Germany after a quiet year in Spain, he is attracting the interest of some of England’s top clubs.

The Liverpool Echo are claiming that Hernandez could be set for a Premier League return this summer.

Both Arsenal and Liverpool are said to be interested in making a bid for the forward.

Leverkusen director Jochen A Rotthaus appears to have accepted that he may lose ‘Chicharito’ - the nickname meaning 'little pea' that the Mexican striker is known by.

“We have to make the most of the Chicharito effect as much as possible,” Rotthaus said last week.

“But at the same time, we must prepare ourselves for a time without Chicharito.

“We must bring other stars to the fore."
