Xabi Alonso will make an emotional return to Liverpool when his contract at Bayern Munich expires, according to reports in Germany.

Alonso's current deal is up in the summer and he is yet to be offered an extension.

And German newspaper Bild claim that has paved the way for the Reds legend, 33, to come back and finish his career at Anfield.
He is able to talk to other clubs in January.

Alonso became one of the most highly rated midfielders in Europe during five years on Merseyside between 2004 and 2009.

He was signed by Rafa Benitez from Real Sociedad in a deal worth a reported £10.5million and went on to make 210 appearances in all competitions.

With the World Cup and winner at the heart of the Liverpool midfield, they won the Champions League, the FA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.

Real Madrid signed him in 2009, before his move to Bayern on a free transfer at the start of last season.

And Reds manager Jürgen Klopp is now said to be keen on bringing him back in the twilight of his career to add some experience to his side.
