Liverpool sent a scout to watch Portugal U21 star Ruben Neves on Friday amid speculation that a deal is being lined up with Porto.

Liverpool were one of 36 clubs to have sent scouts to the Uefa Under-21 qualifying match in Penafiel as representatives of Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan also saw Portugal defeat Hungary 2-0.

Neves was linked with a move to Anfield in the summer and the 18-year-old looks to be a superstar in the making, having already established himself as a regular for Porto and recently assuming the captaincy of the side.

Some sources suggest Liverpool have been in talks with Porto to secure his services for next season and the arrival of Jurgen Klopp as the Reds' new manager can only help to persuade the player that he should head to Merseyside.

Portuguese newspaper O Jojo reported that Liverpool first-team development coach Pepijn Lijnders recommended that the club move for Neves two years ago when he joined after seven seasons working with young players at Porto.
