Skrtel scoops fourth honour

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel set a new record as he was honoured as Slovakian Player of the Year for the fourth time in his career last week.

The 28-year-old, who was previously crowned with the national award in 2007, 2008 and 2011, finished ahead of compatriots Marek Hamsik and Marek Sapara.

"I dreamed of winning this award for the fourth time and it really happened. I am extremely happy and I would like to continue like this," said the centre-back.

"I would like my fans to remember me in a positive way for what I did on the pitch and outside the pitch as well. This is also a great chance to thank them once again. All of them.

"Their support is really important for me and I appreciate it. It is them I care about the most since we play football for them."

The prize capped a landmark 2012 for Skrtel - who was voted Liverpool Player of the Year for 2011-12, became captain of his country, married his partner and signed a long-term contract at Anfield.

Skrtel, who joined the club in 2008 from Zenit St Petersburg, also passed the 200-appearance mark for the Reds last month.
