Xabi Alonso today expressed his delight at the appointment of Brendan Rodgers as Liverpool manager.
The midfielder was speaking from Spain's base at the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine, where he and his teammates were busy preparing for their opening fixture against Italy on Sunday.
And Alonso, who left Anfield in 2009 after five years at the club, took time out to declare his optimism about the Reds' future with new man Rodgers at the helm.
"I think that everyone is really optimistic about the new manager," he told Goal.com. "As far as I knew, he was one of the ones who was going to be approached. As a Liverpool fan it gives me hope for the future."
