Luis Suarez took a massive step towards the 2014 World Cup as Uruguay downed Jordan 5-0 in the first leg of their qualifying play-off on Wednesday.
The victory means the South Americans can seal their spot in Brazil in seven days' time, when they host their Asian opponents in Montevideo for the second leg.
Suarez completed 80 minutes in Amman before being substituted for Diego Forlan.
The Liverpool forward had an inviting early chance to break the deadlock but directed a fifth-minute volley too high from a central position in the Jordan penalty area.
Nevertheless, Uruguay forged a lead midway through the opening period when Maximiliano Pereira converted into a gaping net from close range after a header down by Edinson Cavani.
Three minutes before half-time, La Celeste doubled their advantage; Cristian Stuani ghosted in at the back post to guide a low finish underneath Mohamad Shatnawi for 2-0.
Nicolas Lodeiro then whipped a third into the top corner for the away side and Cristian Rodriguez blasted home in quick succession in the second half.
Cavani launched a long-range free-kick into the net in stoppage time to hand his team a commanding lead ahead of the return fixture.
