Liverpool midfielder Suso completed the full 120 minutes but could not prevent Spain from suffering U20 World Cup elimination by Uruguay in Turkey on Saturday evening.
The 19-year-old has excelled for his country throughout the youth tournament and played in an advanced position against the South Americans at the Ataturk Stadium in Bursa.
Spain were among the favourites to lift the trophy after progressing to the knockout stage with a 100 per cent record and defeating Mexico in the last 16.
Suso went close in the opening minutes with a driven free-kick from long distance and threatened a superb individual goal during extra time but was blocked away after a lengthy dribble.
Then a goal by Uruguay substitute Felipe Avenatti in the 103rd minute of the encounter proved to be the winner, ending Suso and his compatriots' participation in the competition.
