Liverpool missed out on capturing Mark Lawrenson in 1977 but finally got their man four years later for a club record fee; to say the defender was worth the wait would be a massive understatement.
'Lawro' featured at left-back and as a midfielder during his debut season at Anfield but he possessed the natural ability to play at central defence and would later flourish with great success alongside Alan Hansen.
Lawrenson was a tackler of the highest order, capable of retrieving the ball from seemingly desperate situations; his agility and comfort in possession also allowed him to pass out from the back and support attacks.
In terms of trophies, Mark hit the ground running at Anfield like perhaps no other player before or since. He collected a championship medal in each of his first three campaigns and missed only five league fixtures along the way.
His title triumphs were accompanied on each occasion by victory in the League Cup and, in 1983-84, Lawrenson helped Joe Fagan's Reds lift a fourth European Cup to complete an unprecedented treble. The defender racked up an incredible 66 appearances during that season.
A rare year without a trophy was quickly dismissed - with Kenny Dalglish taking the player-manager reins, Liverpool romped to the double. Lawrenson returned from injury just in time to start the FA Cup final against Everton.
The centre-back's medal haul was huge already and yet he approached the 1986-87 campaign with arguably his peak years remaining ahead of him. In a cruel twist of fate, however, his Anfield career was actually drawing to a close.
As usual, he started the season in partnership with Hansen but suffered a serious Achilles injury when playing at home to Wimbledon in March 1987 which left him on the sidelines for almost six months.
Lawrenson returned in September and forced his way back into the starting XI but on his 14th league appearance - entitling the Preston native to a fifth league winner's medal - against Arsenal he was injured again. It was his last match for the club.
