Pace, recovery speed, dominance in the air, passing ability - centre-back Daniel Agger appeared a natural heir to Alan Hansen from the moment he completed a transfer to Liverpool in January 2006.
The biggest clubs around Europe had been alerted to the young Dane's potential and it was the Reds who finished first in the race for his signature; Agger made his debut at home to Birmingham City the following month.
Rafael Benitez suggested the defender could be a mainstay at Anfield for a decade. That forecast has almost been fulfilled, with Daniel passing the 200-appearance mark for the club during 2012-13.
After a handful of games in 2005-06, the next campaign would be Agger's breakthrough season - the cultured centre-half dislodged the great Sami Hyypia from the team and thumped home the club's goal of the season against West Ham.
Later that year, Daniel converted a clever free-kick routine in the Reds' Champions League semi-final, second leg with Chelsea to help secure progress to the Athens final. The Denmark international then played in the showpiece defeat by AC Milan.
Injury restricted Agger to only six appearances in 2007-08 but he returned 12 months later to feature in 18 league matches of Liverpool's dramatic title tussle with Manchester United.
The story would be repeated during the seasons to come, until 2011-12, when Daniel formed an imposing partnership with Martin Skrtel and lifted his maiden piece of silverware - the League Cup.
Brendan Rodgers' opening campaign as Reds boss would prove to be Agger's most consistent to date, with the Dane missing just three fixtures in the Barclays Premier League throughout the season.
Now entering arguably the peak years for a defensive player, and having signed a fresh contract at Anfield in October 2012, supporters can anticipate many more years of reliable security from Agger.
