Liverpool's latest crop of youngsters will be faced with a fresh challenge in their fledgling careers next season, according to Neil Mellor.

The former Reds forward expects Jürgen Klopp to bolster his squad ahead of a campaign that will once again include European football, with Egypt international Mohamed Salah already signed up from AS Roma.

Terms have also been agreed with England youth striker Dominic Solanke, who will join the club on July 1, further increasing the competition for places.

That presents the next test for the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ovie Ejaria and Ben Woodburn following their breakthroughs last term, believes Mellor, but one they are capable of conquering.

“Jürgen is a manager who will give youth an opportunity and he’s got some exciting young players coming through,” he wrote in his latest column for the official Liverpool FC magazine.

“They know there will always be players coming in at a club like Liverpool and these are the challenges they have to deal with to have a career at Anfield.

“It’s up to them to be the best they can every day, to make the necessary sacrifices and to listen to the coaching staff.

“Down at the Academy, Liverpool have a fantastic coaching staff. Alex Inglethorpe, Steven Gerrard, Neil Critchley, Mike Garrity – great people who can help young Liverpool players fulfil their potential if they are listened to.

“More new players will arrive, but the young lads will get opportunities under Klopp to make their mark. They must be ready to take them.”
